News:  Masks are here to stay until there is a vaccine and most people are getting a variety of mask styles and fits to work with their face shape, ear sensitivity and breathability and mask features (nose wire, filter pocket).  Add to that the fashionable colors and patterns.  I'm trying my best to meet your needs and welcome suggestions.   Keep checking back here to see new fabrics and designs; and please post photos of you in your mask on Facebook & Instagram #masksforwishes and share this website with family and friends.   We will get through this and thank you for supporting Make-A-Wish with your purchase.

COMMON QUERIES

WHAT ARE THE MASKS MADE OF?

I use 100% cotton fabric, thread and either hair ties or elastic to construct the masks.

HOW DO I KNOW MY SIZE?

To measure your size take a tape measure (or non stretchy string & ruler) and measure from ear to ear across the bridge of your nose.   The part of your ear to measure from is called the Tragus Then subtract 3.5 inches.  9 inches = XL  8 inches = Large, 7 inches = Medium 6 inches = Small

DO THEY HAVE A POCKET FOR A FILTER?

Yes - you can insert a filter at the top of the masks.  See question about filters below.

HOW MANY LAYERS ARE THERE?

The mask itself is 2 layers, insert a filter to get 3 layers.

DO THEY HAVE A NOSE WIRE?DO MASKS HAVE A NOSE WIRE?

Yes, they all have a bendable nose wire.

I accept cash, personal check (payable to Janna Katz), paypal  to 510-517-6344 or venmo to @Janna-Katz

WHAT ARE THE PAYMENT OPTIONS?

THE FABRIC I WANT IS "COMING SOON" - CAN I PRE ORDER SO I CAN GET IT WHEN IT BECOMES AVAILABLE?

YES!  With each fabric selection I will make between 4 and 10 masks so if you know which you want and the size and ear connector type email me and I will let you know when you can order and pay once the fabric arrives and the masks are sewn.

OH NO, YOU DON'T HAVE MY SIZE IN THE FABRIC  I WANTED - WHAT NOW?

I make between 4 and 12 masks from each fabric so it's possible I might not have the size you want in a particular fabric.   In some cases I may have already reordered the fabric and if so you'll see a note about that.  If the fabric cannot be reordered I'll note that as well.  If an item isn't especially popular I will discontinue it.   I purchase from several fabric stores and I may be able to reorder the fabric you like, but fabric stores also sell out quickly these days!   If you want to know what is available in your size you can also give me a call or send me an email.

HOW DO I CLEAN THE MASK & HOW OFTEN?

I recommend washing the mask each day after wearing.  For best results wash in warm soapy water, rinse, gently squeeze out water & hang to air dry.  Usually will dry by the next day.  Remember to remove any filter before washing.  You can also touch up with an iron.

HAIR TIES VERSUS ELASTIC - WHICH IS BEST?

It's kind of a personal preference. Elastic may be more comfortable but can become overstretched easily with use.  If you have un-detached earlobes elastic may work slightly better than hair ties.   If you're purchasing for someone else elastic can be adjusted whereas hair ties cannot.  The scrunchi hair tie I am using is 4mm and 1.75 inches in diameter unstretched.  For me they are equally comfortable. Hair ties also fit around your wrist or can clip onto a purse easily so you always have your mask with you.  Based on feedback I'm offering "BOTH" as an option which allows you to try elastic and hair tie so you can try on and clip off the one that you don't like as much.  Last but not least I am making Tshirt ties upon request - these are super comfortable and adjustable but look more "casual".

HOW DO YOU PUT ON/TAKE OFF THE MASK?

The top of the mask has the opening for the filter.  The side with the nose wire is the front of the mask.  To put on the mask stretch the hair ties (or elastic) over each ear and then pull down so the mask covers nose and mouth and reaches your chin. Adjust the nose wire to the center of the mask and form around the bridge for a snug fit. To remove the mask use your fingers to slip off at the ears trying not to touch the front of the mask.

CAN YOU DO A CUSTOM ORDER?

If you want 6 or more masks in the same fabric I can do a custom order.   If you want to find a fun themed fabric I recommend searching ETSY under cotton fabric by the yard and the search term like "monkeys".   If you see a fabric by a company called Spoonflower keep in mind that they are taking 5-9 weeks to ship fyi.   I base the price on fabric costs of $10-11/yard so if you want a more expensive fabric the cost could be more. Contact me to discuss your order and time frame.

CAN I ORDER A MASK FOR A FRIEND/FAMILY MEMBER?

Wix doesn't allow gift certificate yet but if you want to order a mask as a gift I can work with you to make this happen.  Just send me an email to clarify any instructions.

WHAT IS YOUR RETURN POLICY?

I can exchange the mask for another size if you pay the shipping back to me I will ship you the replacement at my expense.  I cannot guarantee that the same fabric will be available however.  I can refund the price minus shipping if you return the mask in good condition.

MORE QUESTIONS MORE ANSWERS

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WEAR A MASK?

To stop/slow the spread of the virus.  Until we have a vaccine our best hope of saving lives is to slow the spread by doing the recommended activities of hand washing, physical distancing and wearing a mask.  Wearing a mask protects others from those who may be asymptomatic carriers.  Wearing a mask sends the message we are all looking out for each other and will make those without a mask feel more inclined to fit in by wearing one in the future.

CAN'T I JUST STAY 6 FEET APART AND NOT WEAR A MASK?

More and more places are requiring masks to enter.  Many public places it's difficult to be 6 feet away when passing by others.  We still don't know how effective  the 6 foot distancing is so wearing a mask whenever you are outside your house is an additional layer of protection for yourself and others.

HELP - MY GLASSES ARE FOGGING UP!

As a glasses wearer I know how frustrating it is when you can't see through the fog.  Wash your glasses in soapy water then rinse and air dry (don't polish with cloth).   The soap will leave a film that can help prevent or reduce fogging.  I've also experimented with a folded kleenex set at the top of the mask and that worked well.

MASK HURTS MY EARS!

If you wear your mask for an hour or more you may experience ear fatigue.  If you have an elastic mask you can get an "ear saver" or make one yourself.   The buttons catch the elastic and pull it away from the ear and secure across the back of the head. I'm offering them for $1 with purchase of a mask.  Please note:  I don't recommend them for the hair tie style.

WHAT KIND OF FILTER SHOULD I USE?

There are lots of things on the internet about what makes a good filter and what masks do the best job of filtering out the droplets in the air that could spread the virus.  I do not guarantee the results of the mask in terms of filtration but am following best practices by making 2 layer cotton masks with a filter pocket. The filter I personally use because it is inexpensive, available and effective is called "disposable shop cloth towels" which I purchase at a auto repair supply and cut to fit my mask.  The brand I have is made by Scott and are blue.

This video goes into the science of mask construction and filtration rates in great detail.  based on this video I am now experimenting with polyester/spandex fabrics.  Stay tuned!

This article explains how to  cut up polypropylene bags (like those you are often given as a promotional item) to make washable reusable filters that are electrostatic and therefore good at catching droplets.

Bottom line: The best mask is the mask you will actually wear which is why I try to choose attractive colorful fabrics, comfortable fit and breathability.

HOW I STARTED

When the Covid19 pandemic started I decided to make face masks for friends and family.  I got out my mom's 1951 Singer Featherweight and got started after looking at different patterns on the internet.  After making over 50 masks for friends and family people said I should start selling masks.  I decided by doing so I can promote the wearing of masks and at the same time benefit Make-A-Wish where I am an active wish granting volunteer.  I am hoping to raise $500 for Make-A-Wish and will be donating $5/mask.  ( July update: I reached that original goal in just 2 weeks - I'm now raising my goal to $5000 and am more than half way there!)  I really enjoy the process of sewing masks and helping others.  Please wear your mask whenever you are outdoors and continue all the other CDC health measures to help us stop the spread of this terrible virus.  Please share my website and contact info with anyone you know who might want to purchase a mask.  And if you want to offer a testimonial or suggestions I'd be grateful!  Thank you!  Janna
